We offer career-oriented, value based, quality education that prepares students for a job straight out of college. Some of them go on to set up their own small businesses and have even secured well paying jobs abroad. However, it is not just job training that we offer – work skills can be picked up by a person without too much difficulty. It is the training of the mind that happens at the college, which is a totally different thing altogether.
In a large number of cases, our students come from backgrounds far removed from proper academic environments. The worth of an education is not understood or appreciated. So, it all begins with inculcating a willingness to learn in our students – which is often the most difficult part. Distractions of youth are many and the lack of proper initial schooling is quite telling. Therefore the unlearning of some of the habits they have picked up, the training of the mind to focus and opening their eyes to possibilities hereto unknown are our main challenges.
Our life skills classes, basic computer education, yoga, sports and other activities go a long way in opening the eyes of students to what can be. Further, students are exposed to a larger wider world through interactions with visiting trainers in fields from banking, the Police department, our industrial partners and even neuro-linguistic program exponents.
Thus, we provide education, in its entirety – man-making character building education that enables a person to stand on his or her own feet. Our college is open to all, regardless of faith and belief. We lay special focus on the girl child and their education. Sports and games are offered to both boys and girls in equal measure. We encourage diversity and inclusion and ensure the participation of all in community service initiatives.
We are often asked why we do not offer free education, especially considering the backgrounds of most of the youth. At SVRCC, our education is not free. We charge fees, but at a hugely subsidized rate. We believe that if education is offered for free, it would have no value in the eyes of the recipient. The fees that we charge do not even cover the cost of their free mid-day meals. Students and their families have to be invested in the education, need to have a stake in the education. We have found this approach to work and believe that this is the best way forward.
